Earth Hour campaign to save the earth...

As the mercury soars in the State, it is time to remind oneself of why nature matters. Every March, countries around the world turn off the lights for one hour to show support for protecting the planet. This year, Earth Hour will be observed on March 30 by switching off lights from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Individuals, businesses, governments, and communities all over the world will be asked to turn off non-essential lighting and electrical appliances for one hour. The theme of this year’s celebrations is ‘Give up to give back.’

“Leaving no one behind" World Water Day 2019 Campaign.

World Water Day is coordinated by UN-Water – the UN’s inter-agency collaboration mechanism for all freshwater related issues - in collaboration with governments and partners. 

Water is an essential building block of life. It is more than just essential to quench thirst or protect health; water is vital for creating jobs and supporting economic, social, and human development.

Go- Green Initiative: Free water, toilet facilities for public.

As part of the go-green initiatives, the district administration is partnering with the Kerala Hotels and Restaurants Association (KHRA) to provide the public with free access to drinking water and toilet facilities. By ensuring free drinking water, the administration hopes to reduce over-dependence on plastic water bottles.

District Collector K. Vasuki inaugurated the scheme which was being jointly implemented by the KHRA and the district administration under Project Sthithi of the Cpower5 (Change Can Change Climate Change) initiative.

Soil Health Status of Kerala in the Post-Flood Scenario.

In the post-flood scenario, floodplains and riverbanks should ideally be earmarked for agriculture rather than housing, the State Soil Survey and Soil Conservation Department has recommended. The department has also called for a ban on cultivation on very steep slopes in landslide-prone regions.

The recommendations are part of a 313-page report, Soil Health Status of Kerala in the Post-Flood Scenario, prepared by the department after a detailed study in 13 districts (except Kasaragod) affected by the devastating 2018 flood.

Postal department to conduct letter-writing contest: “Letter to My Motherland”.

The Department of Posts is conducting a national level letter-writing competition on the theme, “Letter to My Motherland”.

According to Senior Superintendent of Post Offices, Mumbai, under the competition, named as "Dhai Akhar", letters should be handwritten in English or Hindi or a local language.

Police to offer 24 hours security surveillance

The Kerala police has come up with a plan to offer 24 hours surveillance for business establishments,homes and ATMs,under the jurisdiction from central facility in the capital.State Police Chief Loknath Behera said that this scheme consists of remotely linking surveillance cameras,intrusion detection systems,movement sensors and fire alarms, which be installed across the state.The devices will be linked to Central Intrusion Monitoring system(CIMS) at the State Police Headquarters, here in the capital. Keltron,India’s largest electronics corporation,will implement this project.

"cVIGIL" App; to dig-out violations during elections.

The Chief Election Commissioner Shri. O.P. Rawat, along with the Election Commissioners Shri Sunil Arora and Shri Ashok  Lavasa launched a mobile app, called ‘Cvigil,’ on July 3, 2018, for citizens to report any violation of the model code of conduct during elections.

Display rates - Kerala government to private Hospital

Finally, Kerala government has thought of a step, a bold step to direct all the private hospitals to display the rates/tariff for each service they provide, so as to enable the people to keep abreast of cost, compare it with other hospitals and take an ideal decision. 

This will come into effect soon as the registration has been made compulsory under Kerala Clinical Establishments and regulation act being framed, to be implemented at the earliest.

Global Warming to reduce Vegetable yield to a new low.

'Global Warming' hither too a common word not given much importance to, has shown its glimpses like flash floods on one side, extreme summer in one part and extreme cold in the other part of the globe.

Researchers have predicted hotter air which will reduce water content as temperature may soar by 4 Degree Celsius at the beginning of 2100. If the Global warming continues at the current rate, it will reduce agriculture yields by 31.5%.

The World Oceans Day events are celebrated on 8th of June every year. We celebrate the day to remind everyone about the major role the oceans have in everyday life. A healthy world ocean is critical to our survival. Every year, World Oceans Day provides a unique opportunity to honour, help protect, and conserve our world’s shared ocean. They are the lungs of our planet, providing most of the oxygen we breathe.

Child Protection Officers wing in Kerala to ensure the safety of Children.

The Kerala State Police Chief Loknath Behera has issued an order appointing one woman police officer in police stations as child protection officer. All police stations in the State will get a woman police officer to ensure the protection of children. One person among civil police officer, senior civil police officer, woman assistant sub-inspector/woman sub-inspector will be selected as child protection officer. The officer would exclusively cater to the atrocities against children, in the wake of increasing child abuse cases in the state.

Indian Start-ups and Dutch companies to combat Air Pollution.

"The Clean Air India Initiative", a collaborative project between the governments of India and Netherland, Get In The Ring, Start-up India, INDUS Forum(an online matchmaking platform of Indian and Dutch businesses).

 The project was launched by Netherland Prime Minister Mark Rutte at Delhi On 24th may. The campaign aims to curb air pollution in Indian cities by promoting partnerships between Indian Startups and Dutch Companies. It will build a network of entrepreneurs working on business solutions for cleaner air. 

Favorable Conditions for the arrival of Monsoon, says Indian Meteorological Department

"The weather conditions are favourable for the southwest monsoon to move into the South Andaman sea in the next 72 hours, easing fears that a severe cyclonic storm in the south-west Arabian Sea might delay its onset. The Monsoon would arrive in Kerala on May 29", K.Sathi Devi, head of the national weather Forecasting Centre said.

The IMD advised fishermen not to venture into the Southeast sea from May 26aswind may strengthen in the region. 

Motor Vehicle department to establish "Safe Zone Project" all over Kerala.

The enforcement wing of the Motor Vehicle Department with the government had given the nod to roll out the "State zone Project", for monitoring the road corridors in the state. The enforcement wing has 625 personnel in the grade of the Motor Vehicle Inspector(MVI) and assistant MVI for 1.5 crore vehicles. It will extend into 51 squads. The government decided to create new 262 posts in the MVD for executing the project. Ten Posts of Regional Transport Officer(RTO), 65 posts of MVI and 187 Posts of AMVI had been sanctioned.

A smart pendant hung with the necklace can pass on information on pressing a button or with an audio password at the time of emergency which will give the exact location where the person is with a signal calling for attention. 

In case the person is not in a position to press the button, it can fend signals of danger to the mobile phones connected to the caretakers or well-wishers like parents, close friends. It can send danger signals to one or more person at the same time.
