Union Government of India has cleared the air that no change or increase in retirement age of Judges as of now.
Supreme Court Judges retire at the age of 65, whereas Judges in the High Courts retire at 62.
This decision by the government has not taken into account seriously, the number of cases pending at Kerala High Court is 1,16,052 as on August 2017 with new cases added on every day.
The situation is same in courts from Magistrates' to Supreme Court. One of the reasons attributed is that the ratio between the comprehensive pending cases 55,259 as of November 2017, disposal is steadily decreasing. Of course, reasons are many, on the other hand, intake of Judges vs the total number of cases, that is pending and New cases added too is disproportionate.
Considering the experience of the Judge on the verge of retirement, the extension of service at present could find some relief to litigants.
