The Supreme Court on Monday found itself surprised by a doubt raised by the Madras High Court about the ban on the sale of liquor in December 2016 within 500 meters along national and State highways. The bone of contention is a July 11 order of the apex court which clarified that stretches of highways running through municipal areas were exempted from the ban. But what puzzled the Madras High Court is whether the exemption granted to municipal areas in the July 11 order pertained to only municipal areas in Chandigarh and none other.

There is a piece of good news for cricket lovers in the state capital. Giving wings to their dreams of watching their favorite cricketers play live, the Kerala Cricket Association (KCA) will take over the Greenfield International Stadium in Kariavattom for a stipulated period of time. If the KCA's takeover of the stadium materializes, Kariavattom will host the international matches to be allotted to the state association. Possibly, the stadium will be the venue for a couple of IPL matches as well in the next edition of the tournament.  
NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind has been elected the country's 14th president. Former governor of Bihar, Kovind (71), will be only the second Dalit leader after RK Narayanan since Independence to occupy India's highest ceremonial post.  In the final vote count, NDA nominee Kovind received 65.6 per cent votes translating into 702,044 electoral college votes, while UPA candidate Meira Kumar managed to get 34.35 per cent (367,314 votes).  According to reports, there was cross voting in UP, Gujarat and Goa during the elections, which resulted into Kovind's massive 2/3rd votes. 
Can punish firms not passing GST gains The National Anti-Profiteering Authority, to be set up under the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime, will have wide-ranging powers, including the power to issue notices to anybody that it feels warrants a “fair enquiry,” as per the rules finalised by the GST Council on Sunday. The powers of the Authority include the ability to order a reduction in prices, impose a penalty, and even cancel the registration of a company deemed to have not passed on a tax rate reduction to consumers.
