Thekkady is a forest reserve located in the Periyar Tiger Reserve in Idukki District, Kerala. Thekkady is a famous wildlife reserve and tourist spot.This wildlife sanctuary and Lake Periyar Lake is on the Tamil Nadu border. The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is an evergreen forest.
The maximum temperature is 29 degrees Celsius and the minimum temperature is 18 degrees Celsius. Annual rainfall of 2900 mm. Here elephant, tiger, wild boar, wild boar, monkey, leopard, Wild animals such as Kezhaman, bear can be seen. Various species of birds are also found here.
The Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary is spread across 777 km2 (300 sq mi), of which 360 km2 (140 sq mi) is thick evergreen forest. The wildlife sanctuary was declared a tiger reserve in 1978. The splendid artificial lake formed by the Mullaperiyar Dam across the Periyar River adds to the charm of the park. The greatest attractions of Periyar are the herds of wild elephants, deer and bison that come down to drink in the lake. The sanctuary can be accessed by trekking, boating or jeep safari.
