Kerala's first woman Principal Chief Commissioner of Income Tax Sasikala Nair, a native of Thiruvananthapuram, has been appointed as the Principal Chief Commissioner of the Income Tax Department in the state. Sasikala has more than 30 years of experience in senior positions in the Ministries of Finance, Petroleum and Natural Gas.
She received her primary education from Thiruvananthapuram and studied at all levels with the Merit Scholarship. She also ranked third in M.Sc. Zoology. Then she studied MBA in Public Policy from the University of Birmingham. She joined the civil service in 1983 after marriage. She got IPS but she selected I.R.S. as her field.
Subsequently worked in Chennai, Mumbai and Kochi performed well in tax collection. While she was the Principal Director of Investigation in Goa, exposed the tax evasion by big corporates. At one point, Shashikala Nair gained attention by seizing foreign assets worth Rs 1,800 crore.
As Deputy Financial Adviser (Navy) in the Ministry of Defense, she handled the budgets of the Navy and Coast Guard. Shashikala also excelled in defense as one of the few women to have served in this capacity. She was also part of the negotiating team for national and international agreements on defense equipment from U.K, Germany, Russia, France and Israel.
