Earth Hour campaign to save the earth...

As the mercury soars in the State, it is time to remind oneself of why nature matters. Every March, countries around the world turn off the lights for one hour to show support for protecting the planet. This year, Earth Hour will be observed on March 30 by switching off lights from 8.30 p.m. to 9.30 p.m. Individuals, businesses, governments, and communities all over the world will be asked to turn off non-essential lighting and electrical appliances for one hour. The theme of this year’s celebrations is ‘Give up to give back.’

“Earth Hour” is a grassroots, worldwide event sponsored by the World Wildlife Federation (WWF). Its goal is to promote a greater awareness of global climate change, and the impact humans have on the environment.

Renjan Mathew Varghese, State Director, WWF-India, says it is about giving up something such as single-use plastics or paper, technology or transport so as to give back to nature. On Saturday, a candlelight vigil and a musical evening will be held on the Manaveeyam Veedhi at 6 p.m. In light of the city Corporation’s green efforts, the WWF has approached Mayor V.K. Prasanth to sign the pledge for the ‘give up’ campaign.

The same morning, an engagement programme with those who come to the museum and zoo premises for their morning walk will be held. This includes games based on single-use plastics provided by the WWF-India secretariat in New Delhi. Prizes will include products that spread the message of Earth Hour, the need for energy conservation, and renewable energy and so on.

WWF, in association with Indus Cycling Embassy, will also conduct a one-hour awareness bicycle rally from Manaveeyam at 6.30 a.m. Heads of corporations and municipalities and company chief executive officers in the country are being urged to sign the ‘give up’ pledge.

The support of Technopark CEO Hrishikesh Nair too has been sought to get the companies and employees there on board for the campaign. Letters have also been sent to Ministers, Collectors, government departments and institutions, and non-governmental organisations to observe Earth Hour.
